Bringing Middle Earth to Life

I recently had the pleasure of working on a commission for a client, which turned out to be my biggest project so far. The diorama has a base of 20x10cm and is 15cm tall, and it’s based on a scene from “The Lord of the Rings”.

Creating a work of art takes more than just a vision. It takes dedication, skill, and an unwavering passion for the craft. And that is exactly what went into the making of this diorama, a commission that was both challenging and exhilarating.

To bring this scene from the movie to life, I started with a base of styrodur, carving and shaping it with care until it resembled the fiery depths of Mount Doom. Then came the delicate process of covering it with a mixture of glue, water, and gypsum, until it was enough and left it to dry.

The real magic came with the painting, where every brush stroke was carefully applied to create the illusion of molten lava, glowing with an otherworldly light. And finally, the models were added, bringing the scene to life with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum standing on the precipice, the fate of Middle Earth hanging in the balance.
